The D'Addario EXL120 is the Super Light 09-42 set from the XL Nickel Wound range: nickel-plated steel wrap wire on a hexagonal high-carbon steel core, for a bright, versatile tone across musical styles. D'Addario describes the 9-42 gauge as easy to bend and very flexible. The pack gives a total set tension of 84.44lb, against 102.5lb for the 10-46 EXL110, so it is the lighter-feeling choice of the two.

If you are moving down from 10s, check neck relief and intonation after restringing. D'Addario's hex core lets the wrap wire grip the core, which D'Addario credits for dimensional stability and precise intonation. The XL Nickel Wound range dates from 1974, and the strings are drawn and wound at D'Addario's New York production facility. Each set is sealed in a recyclable, corrosion-resistant VCI bag carrying a Players Circle code, which helps keep spare sets in a gig bag or fly case fresh until opened.
