Since 1995

The Ultimate Ears story

Ultimate Ears started on a Van Halen tour bus in 1995. Drummer Alex Van Halen needed to protect his hearing without losing what he heard on stage, and the result was the UE-1, which UE describes as the first custom multi-driver in-ear monitor.

Thirty years on, UE says it has made more than 300,000 in-ear monitors, and names Metallica, Dua Lipa and Seal among the artists and tours that use them. Each set is still built and tuned by UE’s technicians from impressions of the wearer’s ears.

1995UE-1Made for Alex Van Halen. UE calls it the first custom multi-driver in-ear monitor.
1996UE-5Two drivers and 26dB of isolation. The line continues as the UE 5 Pro.
2002UE-10 ProSeparate drivers for the bass, mids and treble.

Choose the model, faceplates, halo, logo and cable for each set, tell us about your ear impressions, and send it. We price it and reply within the hour in office hours. Nothing is ordered or charged until you approve the quote.

Faceplates, halos and logos

Choose each earpiece’s faceplate separately, or match them, from seven families. Add a silver or gold halo, keep the UE logo in silver or gold, swap it for your initials, or put your band or company logo on the faceplate. Finish with a black or clear cable.

Sending artwork? Use a PNG with a transparent background to sit on a coloured faceplate, or a JPEG to fill the whole faceplate. Make it at least 3 × 3 inches at 300 dpi; very fine detail can be lost at faceplate size.

How they’re made

From ear impression to finished shell

Your ear impressions, or an .stl scan, are where every set starts. UE makes a shell that follows the shape of your ear canal, fits the drivers and crossover inside it, then finishes and tests each earpiece before it is sent out. UE uses digital ear scanning and 3D printing for the shells.

−26dB isolation on every model. With less stage noise reaching your ears, you can run your mix at a lower level.
Fitted to your ears. Made from your impressions or an .stl scan, with the same seal every time you put them in.
IPX cable as standard. IP67-rated connectors with built-in earloops, in 50 or 64 inches.
Group orders. Design as many sets as you need in one enquiry, and we quote artist and multi-set pricing.

Already have impressions or an .stl scan? Send them with your design. If not, we book an appointment for you anywhere in the UK for a flat £150.

Questions

Which model is right for me?

Any model can work for any role, so start with the sound you like and your budget. The Premier and Live suit almost anyone: singers, drummers, players and engineers. For more midrange, look at the UE 7. For more low end, the 6+ or 11. For headroom in a dynamic set, the 18+. For a flat reference, the RR+. The UE 5 is the way in. Tell us what you play and how loud the stage is, and we will suggest one.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the model, finishes and how many sets you want. The model cards show each model's pre-discount RRP, and we confirm your price in the quote before anything is ordered, so you can change or drop options first.

How long does it take?

Standard production is about 14 calendar days from when you approve your quote. Rush production takes 5, 3 or 1 business days (Monday to Friday, not bank holidays) for £175, £225 or £275 + VAT per set. Rush days cover production only; delivery takes extra time. Add a needed-by date in the designer and it shows which turnaround fits. Timings depend on Ultimate Ears and your ear impressions being usable.

I don't have ear impressions. What do I do?

We can book an impression appointment for you, anywhere in the UK, for a flat £150. Say so in the designer and we will arrange it with your quote.

How do I put them in?

Ultimate Ears shows the technique in this short video. If they still don’t feel right once you’ve tried it, call or email us.

I have an .stl file. Can I send it?

Yes. Upload it in the designer. If you have physical impressions or scans elsewhere, tell us where they are and we will advise.

Which cable length should I choose?

Your set comes with a 50- or 64-inch IPX cable. 50 inches suits most players with a beltpack on the hip. 64 inches gives drummers, keyboard players and anyone who moves around more slack. Choose black or clear in the designer.

Can I put my band or company logo on them?

Yes. Upload artwork in the designer for each earpiece. A PNG with a transparent background sits on a coloured faceplate; a JPEG fills the whole faceplate. Send it at least 3 × 3 inches at 300 dpi, and we will check it before anything is made.

Which spare cable fits my set?

It depends on when your set was made: IPX for sets made after April 2018, SL for September 2010 to April 2018, and U2 two-pin for sets made before September 2010. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the connector at the earpiece end.

Can I return custom IEMs?

No. They are made to the shape of your ears, so they are non-returnable. That is why we check every detail with you in the quote.

Can I order for a whole band or crew?

Yes. Choose how many sets you want at the start and design each one. Tell us about bigger groups in your notes and we will take it from there.

Are prices shown with or without VAT?

Both. Each price shows the figure excluding VAT first, with the price including VAT beneath it.
